In some cases, a * is placed after some transliterated word(s). The teacher corrects the mistakes and approves the correct recitation. The traditional method of learning the recitation is for the teacher to recite a part and for the student to repeat it after him/her. It is sinful to commit mistakes while reciting the verses of the Qur an on one s own, but not under the supervision of the qualified teacher. The transliteration is meant to be an aid only while studying under a teacher. We emphasize that the proper pronunciation of the letters and verses cannot be ascertained except by learning from a qualified, trustworthy teacher.
